August 6, 2014 By Lead Astronomer

The Trifid Nebula or Messier 20 is an HII region located in Sagittarius and is about 5,000 light years away. The Trifid Nebula shows a unique combination of three types of nebulae. The red regions are emission nebula, the blue regions are reflection nebula and the dim regions are dark nebula which is dust obscuring the view. This photograph is almost 6 hours of exposure time: 100 minutes of luminance and 80 minutes for each of RGB. Processed in Pixinsight 1.8
